Fitzsimmons, Robert James "Ruby Robert" (1863-1917) British-born boxer who grew up in New Zealand. He was the first fighter to hold the world boxing championship in three weight divisions and is considered one of the greatest fighters who ever lived. He went to the U.S. in 1890 and on January 14, 1891 won the world middleweight title by knocking out Jack "Nonpareil" Dempsey in 13 rounds. Fitzsimmons beat Peter Maher in 1896 to win the heavyweight title, then on March 17, 1897, he knocked out American Jim Corbett in round 14 to retain the title. In 1903, Fitzsimmons took the light-heavyweight championship from George Gardiner by a decision in 20 rounds and made history for having won in three weight divisions. Fitzsimmons was inducted into the Ring Boxing Hall of Fame in 1954 and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990.

Extremely rare signature, "Robert Fitzsimmons," on card of the turn-of-the-century collection of Charles Main, 2½ x 5 in., no place, no date. Light toning, else fine. Large, bold signature.
