Tarbell, Ida (1857-1944) American author, Lincoln scholar, and investigative reporter. Typed Letter Signed "Ida M. Tarbell" on letterhead of McClure's Magazine, for which she wrote her muckraking articles, one page, 11 x 8½ in., New York, Feb. 17, 1904. To Gen. Herman Haupt, chief of the Military Railroads during the Civil War, declaring an interest in the political and legal questions involved in the controversy over the choice of Panama or Nicaragua for a canal. She mentions the opposition of the Trans-continental railroads, President Theodore Roosevelt ("If Mr. Roosevelt is their tool in this matter, he must be so unwittingly") and says, "…there seems to be no doubt that the Panama route will be adopted…." Slight ink brushing to signature, else fine.
