Lot 924

1804 Private Restrike NGC graded MS65 Brown. Frosty chocolate and steel with generous traces of faded mint red showing on both sides. No defects, virtually flawless in every respect. The luster is slightly subdued by a very thin layer of natural oxidation, but this piece offers excellent eye appeal. These were struck privately outside the mint using scrap dies in the 1850's or early 1860's. The obverse die was an altered version of the 1803 S-261 die and the reverse was from 1820 N-12. LDS showing extensive die rust and arcing die cracks on the left side of the obverse. Our grade is MS63. The Reiver provenance is noted on the NGC label. Pop 5; 2 in 66 at NGC.
Estimated Value $1,500-UP.
Ex George Ramont-Jules Reiver, Heritage 1/24/06:19605.
