Lot 815

1797 S-136 R3 AU50. The obverse is a beautiful lustrous chocolate with traces of frosty lighter steel brown in protected areas around the portrait, and this side offers mint state eye appeal. The reverse is a glossy chocolate brown blending to reddish chocolate in an uneven pattern. Microscopic traces of verdigris can be found in a few of the reddish chocolate areas, clearest at STA in STATES. LDS, Breen state V, with slightly reflective fields from a fresh die polishing. Called AU50 and CC#4 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 sharpness net VF30 and tied for CC#11, his photo #23336. The obverse of this cent is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. Comes with a partially beaded edge on the planchet. This edge beading is noted by Breen who mentions that he had seen only 2 examples with this feature. Comes with a long, distinguished provenance.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
