Lot 717

1811 C-2 R3 PCGS graded XF45. Dark chocolate and steel brown. No roughness or marks, but the luster is a bit subdued thanks to a thin layer of natural oxidation. Nicely struck LDS, Manley state 3.0. The die clashmarks at the lowest curl are sharp. The PCGS label identifies this as a "Partial Collar Strike." This is difficult to assess in the slab, but the edge is most certainly imperfectly formed at the top and bottom of the reverse. The collar used on these strikes was rather loose fitting (the close-fitting collar design came later), and the defects we can see could well have come from a strike that took place partially out of the collar. But the error may have come from a partial impression of a planchet cutter that was moved slightly before finishing the job. Either way, this is a sharp example of an obvious mint error. Our grade is VF35.
Estimated Value $3,000-UP.
