Lot 3759

1838-C $2.50 Classic Head. PCGS graded AU-58. Small obverse scratch in an otherwise wide, smooth expanse of frosty golden luster. The strike is sharp on this attractive coin, including the hair curls above Liberty's ear, which typically lack their finer detail. The reverse is equally clear. There are a few faint, shallow scuffs in the reverse fields in addition to the one mentioned on the obverse, but they are unobtrusive; they in no way detract from the impressive appearance of this important numismatic treasure. First year issue at the Charlotte, North Carolina Mint.

Only one die combination was used to strike this denomination. A total of 7,880 pieces were struck. The coin offered here has a fine die crack extending diagonally from the reverse rim at about 10 o'clock extending into the left field above the eagle's wing, and another die crack from the eagle's beak to the upper right corner tip of the shield. Pop 10; 5 finer at PCGS (PCGS # 7697) .
Estimated Value $10,000 - 11,000.
