Lot 3665

1795 Two Leaves B-1, BB-21 Rarity 2. NGC graded EF-45. Attractive "antique silver" toning spreads smoothly across the matte-like surfaces of this attractively Flowing Hair coin. A blend of shades can be seen on both sides: deepest silver-gray to russet at the periphery, lighter shades within and on the devices. The strike is strong throughout with the main designs well detailed in the wings and Liberty's hair. Rims are above-average as well.

The Flowing Hair type dollar had a short production run: only in 1794 and 1795. No doubt a greater mintage would have occurred in the former year, had a coining press of sufficient capacity been available to use; the press used for striking half dollars was all that was on hand, and the coins did not strike up satisfactorily. Accordingly, mintage in quantity was postponed until proper equipment could be obtained. The Flowing Hair dollars encompass many interesting die varieties.
Estimated Value $9,000 - 10,000.
