1920-S Mercury Dime. PCGS graded MS-65 Full Bands. Nice light toning. An example of this rare issue that is one of the most difficult Mercury Dimes to find in Gem condition with Full Bands. For some reason, the San Francisco Mint slipped badly in 1920 in its oversight of production quality. It is also possible the demands for coinage made the staff run the presses until the dies had worn. Be that as it may, this handsome piece not only has complete band definition but there is very little fadeaway on the zero in the date, a problem this issue shares with the 1920-D since the spacing there did not allow enough room for proper flow of the metal into the die in the date area. The near pristine surfaces are covered with light steel to blue-steel antique color along with blushes of golden hue over both sides. Strong underlying mint frost supports this. Rare in such an exclusive state of preservation. This piece is finer than 95% of surviving Mint State '20-S Dimes; most big-name collections of the past failed to include a Gem Full Bands example. Pop 25; 10 finer, 7 in 66, 3 in 67 (PCGS # 4933) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,250.
