Empire of Trebizond. Andronicus I Gidon, c. 1222-1235. Electrum Aspron Trachy (low gold content; 2.77 g). The Virgin standing, facing; in left field, eight-pointed star. Reverse: Christ Chalcites standing, facing. Cf. Bendall, "Numismatic Circular" June 2002; D.O. IV, pl. XXXVII, El.1 (Nicaea). Rare. Wonderfully bold and clear strike; Extremely Fine.

This rare coin is from the Eastern Empire, whose coinage usually consists of silver aspers depicting Saint Eugenius on horseback. This present type is strongly influenced by later Byzantine coinage.
