Lot 1174

1850 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Red & Brown. The obverse is lustrous mint red fading to chocolate and steel brown with at least half the red showing. The reverse is lustrous uniform chocolate and steel brown without any mint color remaining. Most of the toning on the obverse is located in the field behind the portrait, and the sharp contrast is distracting. In addition, there is a spot of darker reddish chocolate toning in the field touching the main curl. Otherwise this piece is flawless. LDS, die state c. A die crack passes through the tops of ME in AMERICA to the dentils over the adjacent A. Our grade is MS62+. Noyes photo #30686. Comes with a nice provenance, and the attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; 2 finer; 1 in 65RB; 1 in 66RB.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
Ex Herman Halpern, Stack's 3/16/88:636-J. R. Frankenfield, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/17/01:1579.
