Lot 1114

1848 N-9 R1 PCGS graded MS64 Brown. The obverse is a beautiful lustrous olive and bluish steel with generous traces of mellowed mint red remaining. The reverse is bright original mint red fading to steel brown on the highpoints with more than half the original color remaining. This cent is virtually flawless. The only marks are a tiny struck-through line (caused by a piece of thread or fine wire on the die) in the field before the neck, a very shallow planchet flake in the field above star 11, and an arc of slightly darker toning at the dentils off the stem tip. MDS, die state b, with a fine die crack through the top of ME but before any rim cuds. Our grade is consistent with the slab grade. Tied for CC#4 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 2; none finer at PCGS in BN.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
Ex Del Bland 8/75-G. Lee Kuntz, Superior 10/6/91:555.
