Lot 1081

1847/7 N-2 R3 Large 47 over Small 47 PCGS graded AU53. Glossy chocolate brown with underlying frosty luster showing through in the fields and protected areas. There are some light nicks on the cheek, one more in the field before the chin, and a small nick on the rim above star 4. A spot of greenish verdigris (probably removable) is at the dentils tips right of star 6. A sharp cent, but it needs a bath to remove crud that's caked into many of the protected areas. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The fine die lines from the dentils at star 13 are clear. The "Small 47" at the top of the normal 47 is obvious. (Actually the punches used were of the same size, but the upper ones were lightly punched into the die before being repositioned lower.) Convention and inertia call for this to be a "Large 47 over Small 47" variety, and it is identified that way on the PCGS label. Our grade is net EF45. Pop 2; 10 finer at PCGS in BN.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
