Hokinson, Helen E (1893-1949) American illustrator. One of the premier cartoonists at New Yorker magazine, contributing 68 covers and some 1800 cartoons over a 20-year span. Her well-to-do matrons, with their fur wraps and elegant hats, became a distinctive part of New Yorker's famous repertoire of characters and images and are instantly recognizable even today. Illustration created for the cover of New Yorker magazine (Hokinson has inked in the magazine's title), ink and watercolor on paper. Sheet size: 12¼ x 15½ in., image size: 12 x 9 in. Stamped on verso with The New Yorker, Inc. copyright statement. The illustration features two of Hokinson's club women meeting at the Yale/Harvard football game, both apparently conflicted about which team to favor. Signed in pencil at lower right. Labeled "989" in red pencil at lower left corner. Very good to fine; some acid burns at top margin could be easily matted out, as could smudges at right margin.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.
