Great Britain, 1859, Pulkova Observatory Folded Wrapper. A folded wrapper from London (On His Majesties Service) as addressed to Friedrich Georg Wilhelm von Struve (1793-1864) at the Pulkova Observatory in St. Petersburg. Herr von Struve was the first of a family of astrnomers up to and including Otto Struve, who was Professor of astrophysics at the University of Chicago and director of theYerkes Observatory and the McDonald Observatory, professor of astrophysics at the Univ. of California and director of its Leuschner Observatory. In 1960 he became director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory here in the US.
His great grandfather, Friedrich, was director of Dorpat Observatory (1817-1839) and proved that double stars are not exceptional and that star systems are governed by the laws of gravity. He became director of the new Pulkova Observatory and was one of the first three astronomers who almost simultaneously obtained an approximate stellar parallax (Answers.com).
An important document in excellent condition.
