Lot 621

1848 N-23 R3. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. Frosty chocolate brown and steel with lighter golden brown toning in protected areas on both sides. No notable marks or other defects, just a trace of rub on the highest points of the design. The surfaces are covered with a thin layer of natural oxidation that subdues the underlying mint luster, and this could be removed to bring out the potential of this cent. Nicely struck EDS, die state a. The fine die lines are sharp on both sides. Our grade is AU58+, very close to mint state, and CC#4 for this tough die variety in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
