Lot 588

1847 N-24 R1. MS-64. Lustrous bright original mint red faded to light olive on the devices, more than a third of the original color remaining, mostly on the reverse. Great eye appeal. The only marks are a spot of slightly darker toning on the rim at star 12, a shallow planchet chip hidden among the myriad die finishing lines right of the main curl, and a tiny planchet flake in the field before the lips. Sharply struck EDS, die state a. The obverse fields are covered with die finishing lines at various angles down to the right suggesting the mint worker responsible for die preparation forgot the final die polishing step before placing this die into service. The die was soon removed from service and polished to remove all these lines, but quite a few examples exist for us to enjoy, and this is one of the very best of that select group. Tied for CC#4.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
