Lot 536

1845 N-9 R2. NGC graded MS-65 Brown. Clipped Planchet. Lustrous chocolate and light olive with bluish steel overtones on the reverse. Tiny peeps of original mint color remain on the obverse and at least 10% of the reverse is covered with mint red. The notable marks are a couple thin, very light nicks in the middle of the jawline and a dull rim nick at the bottom of the reverse. A rather large straight-edge planchet clip affects the dentils from star 7 nearly to star 10, and the dentils across the planchet show minor strike weakness thanks to the "Blakesley effect" that helps authenticate genuine planchet clip errors. M-LDS, die state b late. The die crack from the U to the dentils under the ribbon is strong but the rim cud has not formed. Our grade is MS60. An impressive example of this type of mint error. The NGC label includes the attribution and mentions the "10% straight clip" error.
Estimated Value $600-UP.
Ex Manuel Ahumada-Chris McCawley 1/05-Phyllis Thompson.
