Lot 502

1842 N-7 R2. AU-55. Large Date. Very close to mint state but there is a very thin, crack-like planchet lamination extending from the dentils over star 5 down through that star to the dentils left of star 2. This is the only mark visible to the unaided eye, but a glass also reveals a light scuff in the field close above the head under star 7. Lustrous light bluish steel and chocolate with generous traces of slightly faded mint red showing on the reverse. E-MDS, die state a. The die lines at ME are clear. The strike is quite nice for this variety, although there is minor weakness at the top of the ear, as always. Tied for CC#9. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS64 Brown (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution).
Estimated Value $500-UP.
