Lot 476

1840 N-4 R3. AU-55. Small Date. The so-called 40 over 39 overdate variety. Very close to mint state but there is a planchet void on the rim at OF-A where a small piece of the copper flaked away. Otherwise this cent offers outstanding eye appeal. Lustrous steel brown and light chocolate with generous traces of the original mint red remaining on both sides. Sharply struck E-MDS, die state a. The die defects under the date are bold (these lumps were once considered evidence of a 40 over 39 overdate) and there are several rim cud breaks from under the 18 clockwise to star 2.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
