1796 S-88 R4 Flipover Double Strike. PCGS graded VF-20. Choice glossy chocolate and steel brown with hints of frosty luster showing in protected areas. Flawless except for a speck of waxy greenish crud in the dentils left of the bottom edge of the cap, and this piece of debris should be removed before it affects the underlying copper. (This speck was not present when the coin was sold raw in our July 2003 sale.) This cent was dramatically double struck. The initial strike was 10% off center to K-10. The coin was then flipped over in the press and rotated about 100 degrees clockwise before being struck a second time. The second strike was properly centered on the planchet, and it is reasonable to assume the mint workers intentionally corrected their initial error. The result is a fantastic mint error, one of the best examples known of the flipover double strike type of error on an early cent. Strong undertype remains visible on both sides, and traces of the 9 from the initial strike show at D-S on the reverse. Late die state with a fine die crack from the right top of the 7 to the shoulder loop above. A perfect mate for the double struck 1795 cent offered a few lots earlier. The PCGS grading label includes the attribution and mentions the flipover double strike.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 15,000.
