Lot 334

1795 S-78 R1 Boldly Double Struck. PCGS graded VF-30. Choice glossy chocolate and medium brown. The surfaces are smooth and virtually flawless offering outstanding eye appeal. The only mark is a tiny nick in the field off the chin. This cent was double struck with both impressions properly centered on the planchet but rotated 40 degrees CCW between the strikes. The result is a dramatic error with two complete dates. This cent is plated on page 256 of Walter Breen's book on the early large cents to illustrate this type of mint error. The PCGS grading label includes the attribution and indicates the cent was double struck and rotated in the collar. Our grade is VF25 choice.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 15,000.
