Lot 2373

1876-CC $20 Liberty. PCGS graded MS-60. Lovely golden toning. 138,441 pieces struck of which 3,550 are estimated to have survived. Although uniformly frosted, the fields are slightly brighter than the devices on both sides, the latter being somewhat satiny. Golden iridescence is noted throughout, a consequence of the attractive toning, and the overall appearance is one of full, delightful originality.

Taking a note from Rusty Goe's "The Mint on Carson Street", we learn that "From a technical standpoint, the quality of workmanship on 1876-CC double eagles receives high marks, yet because of repeated shipping and handling, eye appeal, at least from a collector's viewpoint, is often less than desirable." Which obviously puts this handsome specimen in an advantageous position vis a vis others in similar condition, since it lacks the usual heavy bag and handling marks Goe mentions. Pop 54; 120 finer, 69 in 61, 51 in 62 (PCGS # 8977) .
Estimated Value $6,000 - 6,500.
