Lot 2359

1873-CC $20. NGC graded AU-55. Only 22,410 pieces struck. A predominantly untoned example. There is some minor surface roughness around Liberty's ear plus the usual, though modest, amounts of circulation marks. The luster almost fills the fields and extends well across the main devices. It occupies the deepest (protected) recesses of Liberty's coronet and hair, for instances, and throughout the central part of the reverse where the complicated raised devices afford ample shielding to the underlying flat surface.

Carson City Mint had entered its fourth year of operation when it struck this 1873-CC double eagle. Production had been miserably low (1870) to relatively low (1873) before rising in dramatic fashion in 1874-76, the three peak years of Carson's first decade. 1873-CC has long been seen as both a rarity and a condition rarity. Only a few hundred are known, certified and uncertified, in the various stages of About Uncirculated condition. If you are a wealthier individual who has found his niche in collecting U.S. $20 gold pieces, this 1873-CC AU55 should be first on your list. Carson City Mint twenties are very popular with a certain sophisticated section of the numismatic community!Pop 72; 110 Finer, 92 in 58, 12 in 60, 5 in 61, 1 in 62.
Estimated Value $10,000 - 12,000.
