Stanhopes - Group of Five. Five optical devices called "stanhopes," holding the following microscopic portrait images: two of Georges Boillot, winner of the 1912 Grand Prix of France and his Peugeot (with Jules Goux who would be the first Frenchman and European to win the Indianapolis 500); one of Joe Dawson, winner of the 1912 Indianapolis 500; one of a Zeppelin named Viktoria Luise; and one of Jack London, author of White Fang and Call of the Wild. Each cylindrical device resembes a 1½ in. long miniature telescope made of brass-like metal and a leather sheath. Made in France, which was advanced in lenswork and camera production. Looking into the small end of one of these "stanhopes" reveals a portrait at the other end.
Estimated Value $1,000 - 1,500.

Realized $617
