The Empire of Thessalonica. John Comnenus-Ducas, 1237-1242. billion trachy (1.46g), Thessalonica. Cross with star at each extremity. Rev. Crowned busts of John, on l., and St. Demetrius, nimbate, on r., holding between them staff surmounted by large fleur-de-lis. DOC 37; Sear-Bendall 2222. Nearly Extremely Fine and very rare with light brown patina, important for providing the obverse description for this type which is uncertain on the other known specimens.
