Lot 189

Gordian II Africanus, AD 238. AR Denarius, Rome mint. Laureate, cuirassed and draped but right of Gordian II. Reverse: Providentia standing left, holding rod and cornucopiae, leaning on column; globe at feet. RIC 1; BMC 19. Rare. Large round flan, possessing a gem of a portrait. Extremely Fine.

The recent marketplace has shown a small number of mint state denarii of this ruler and his father, Gordian I, which would probably indicate a treasury or mint hoard having been recently found. None of this handful of coins shows wear, although the quality of striking and large flan of this particular specimen are noteworthy. The reign of the first two Gordians lasted only 21 days during the early part of AD 238.
Estimated Value $1,500 - 2,000.

Realized $4,140
