Commodus, AD 177-192. AE Medallion (41.27 g; 38 mm) struck at Rome, AD 185. Laureate and draped bust right of Commodus. Reverse: Jupiter enthroned between the Dioscuri. Gnecchi II, 74. Very rare

The reverse depicts Jupiter and his two sons Castor and Pollus, savior gods who protected mariners at sea and soldeirs on the battlefield. Nearly Extremely Fine to Extremely Fine.

Vestiges of probable silvering in ancient times visible mainly on obverse in fields and shoulder. This reverse design was later transformed into the enthroned emperor flanked by two figures types used on the gold medallions of the Constantinian family (see Toynbee, ANS NS plates 5 and 6).
