Lucius Vitellius, d. AD 52. Gold Aureus (7.07 g) minted at Rome by his son, the emperor Aulus Vitellius, AD 69. Laureate head right of the emperor Vitellius. Reverse: Laureate and draped bust right of L. Vitellius with eagle-tipped scepter. RIC 98 [as R2]. Two inconsequential old scratches on obverse at four o'clock. Very Fine.

The emperor's illustrious father, here honored on this very rare aureus, was the acting emperor during Claudius' military campaign in Britain.
