Lot 2310

1857 C-1 R2. MS-60 Prooflike. Lightly dipped long ago, now mostly retoned greenish olive brown and light bluish steel mixed with reddish tan. No notable marks. Nicely struck very early die state with prooflike fields on both sides. The fields on the reverse are covered with fine die polishing lines down to the right, strongest at OF-AM. Breen lists a few proof examples from this die pair, and this piece was cataloged as a proof in the Abe Kosoff sale of the Alex Shuford collection. However, we are convinced this is a prooflike business strike from the very early state of the dies. Either way, this piece is quite unusual for an 1857 half cent.
Estimated Value $400-UP.
The Leo Wexler Collection.

Realized $391
