Lot 2277

1808 C-3 R1. NGC graded VG-10. Glossy olive, steel, and chocolate brown. Looks choice to the unaided eye, but a glass reveals many faint hairline scratches on both sides, none significant. MDS, Manley state 3.0. What makes this otherwise generic half cent special is the bold double strike that left strong evidence of the initial strike on both sides. Both strikes were within the confines of the collar of the press, but the planchet rotated about 40 degrees clockwise between impressions. The profile of Ms Liberty from the first strike shows clearly on the face and hair of the second strike, and two fractions show on the reverse. Ample additional evidence of the first strike is visible as well, especially on the reverse. Another very interesting early half cent error in this sale. Our grade is F12. The attribution and double struck with rotation features are noted on the NGC label.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
