Lot 2110

1875 Half Dollar Octagonal Indian. Breen and Gillio-933 PCGS Ungraded. Rarity 5. Our grade is sharpness of AU. Nice golden hues and semi-reflective surfaces. A couple of moderate obverse scratches keep this item from being graded. The plate coin for the second edition of Breen-Gillio. A gem example of this date, downgraded because of some light scratches on the eleventh through thirteenth stars. The "Bed of Spikes" variety, so named because of the long, tooth-like denticles that surround the obverse. Stars flat, with "ghosts" in the wreath on the opposite side of the coin (there simply was not enough metal to fill the recessed areas of the dies. The obverse die of this variety was later used to make a non-denominational charm, following the arrest of a competing manufacturer Christopher Mohrig)! (PCGS # 10791) .
Estimated Value $350 - 400.
Ex: Jay Roe Collection The Tom Kelly Collection.
