Barcid Issue. Scipio Africanus, c. 209 BC and later. AR Shekel or Didrachm (7.1 g) minted at New Carthage. Bare head left, beardless, with short, straight hair and Roman nose (Scipio?). Reverse: Horse standing right; behind, in middle background, palm tree with fruits; "IA" or Punic "yod" in right field. Essays Mattingly Pl. III, 7(h). Very rare with a very impressive portrait, possibly of Hannibal. NGC graded Extremely Fine: Strike 4/5; Surface 4/5. Our grade is Choice Very Fine.

E.S.G. Robinson's ground-breaking article, concerning the coinage of Punic Spain and its metrological relationship to early Roman Republican coinage, appears in the 1956 Essays in Roman Coinage Presented to Harold Mattingly. Here, he suggests that this Barcid, or Hispano-Roman, issue was minted under Hasdrubal, brother of Hannibal.
Estimated Value $5,000 - 6,000.
