Lot 831

1797 Draped Bust Dime. 16 stars. PCGS graded MS-62. Lightly toned. A sharp, clear date on this handsome specimen (the obverse die break became a cud in its terminal stage with the date almost totally obliterated). A coin with a nice frosty appeal, silver with just a hint of surface color appearing but generally as when first struck. It is easy to see this piece was delivered a more than sufficient blow by the dies compared to most draped bust dimes of 1797, the dies were still in their pristine condition well before termination, which imparted their fine detail to the struck planchet.

Although Mint records show a slightly higher output in 1797 than in 1796, the late Walter Breen, a noted numismatic scholar, speculated that some dimes made in 1797 may have been dated 1796. Dimes dated 1797 are rarer across the grade spectrum than the first-year pieces, and particularly so in Mint State. Pop 3; 3 finer; 1 in 65; 2 in 66. (PCGS # 4462) .
Estimated Value $40,000 - 44,000.
