Lot 616

1808 S-277 R2. PCGS graded AU-55. Turban Head. Off Center. Very attractive glossy chocolate and light olive brown with underlying lustrous very faded mint color showing through in the fields and protected areas. No roughness or verdigris. The only marks are a faint horizontal hairline under CEN, a few more under the wreath, and a large planchet chip or dig on the edge of the planchet at the bottom of the reverse. This last mark is the only distracting defect, but it may have been caused during striking when the planchet got misplaced in the press or it may have been present on the planchet before striking. E-MDS, Breen state IV. Struck 30% off center to K-4.5. A beautiful off center Turban Head cent. Our grade is EF45. The attribution, 30% off center strike, and March Wells provenance are all noted on the PCGS label.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
Ex Stack's 11/13/07:306.

Realized $4,600
