Lot 611

1807 S-271 R1. VF-30. "Comet" Obverse. Choice glossy chocolate and steel with traces of slightly lighter brown toning mixed in on the obverse. Frosty luster remains visible in some of the protected areas. This cent is choice, virtually flawless. M-LDS, Breen state IV late, Iskra state III. The "Comet" break behind the head is clear and other parallel die flaws show in the obverse fields attesting to the later state of the die. In addition, there is a strong double profile along the bottom edge of the jaw (a result of die bounce). A premium example of this popular "Redbook" variety. Removed from an NGC slab graded EF40 (NGC label included, and it identifies this as the "Comet" variety).
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
Ex McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/18/01:2291.

Realized $4,140
