Lot 598

1801 S-218 R5+. VG-7. 3-Error Reverse. Glossy steel and chocolate brown with darker chocolate and olive brown toning in protected areas. The fields and protected areas are covered with extremely fine roughness that’s well hidden by the glossy patina. There is a small patch of very shallow reddish olive crud under the U in UNITED; otherwise the surfaces are free of any trace of verdigris. The only notable signs of contact are a faint hairline scratch through the date and another diagonal one over NE in ONE. These scratches are old and blend perfectly into the patina. LDS, Breen state II. Swelling nearly obliterates the curl left of the date. The date is clear and the 3 die-cutter errors on the reverse are obvious. Noyes photo #28143.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
Purchased unattributed in Louisville KY 5/18/90.

Realized $3,680
