Lot 581

1796 NC-5 R7+. Good-6. Draped Bust. Very slightly sharper, especially on the obverse, but the fields are covered with extremely faint roughness. No verdigris, and the only marks are a small, shallow planchet chip in the field near the dentils left of the hair ribbon and a rim bruise at RI in AMERICA. Lightly cleaned and retoned a slightly glossy reddish chocolate and steel brown. The date is strong and the legends are clear except inside the wreath where ONE CENT is faint at best. Called G6 and CC#3 in the Bland census. Noyes says G6 net G5 and also CC#3, his photo #28292. The finest known example is impounded in the ANS collection making this is the second finest available to collectors from the 8 examples known today.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
Purchased unattributed from Burd Saylor (Louisville Numismatic Exchange) in 1989.

Realized $10,350
