Lot 580

1796 S-104 R3. VF-25. Draped Bust. LIHERTY Obverse. Sharpness VF35 but a bit dark with traces of extremely faint roughness under the slightly glossy patina. The roughness is strongest in the field before the face, but it is faint even there. No verdigris, and the only mark is a trivial rim nick at ER in LIHERTY. Slightly glossy dark olive and steel. The date and legends are strong and the LIHERTY feature is bold. M-LDS, Breen state II late with obvious die rust showing in some of the fields. Called VF35 net VF25 and tied for CC#5 in the Bland census. Noyes says EF40 net VF20 and tied for CC#6, his photo #29090. Either way this is a sharp condition census example of a popular "Redbook" variety.
Estimated Value $4,000 - 6,000.
