Lot 578

1796 S-98 R4. VF-35. Draped Bust. Sharper by at least 5 points but lightly cleaned and nicely retoned glossy light to medium chocolate brown. No roughness, verdigris, or contact marks. The only defects are some of the usual microscopic planchet chips scattered over the planchet, including a very thin horizontal one in the field left of the lower end of the hair ribbon and another on the upper left part of the F in OF, all as struck. Great eye appeal. MDS, Breen state II. Called EF45 net VF25 and tied for CC#5 in the Noyes census, his photo #32076. Bland says EF40 net VF25 and CC#4 among the confirmed examples. Both assessments were made before the cent was properly retoned. The finest known example is impounded in the ANS Museum, so the pool of better examples is quite limited.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
Ex Howard R. Newcomb, J. C. Morgenthau & Co. #458, 2/1945:96 (as Uncirculated)-Abe Kosoff (Numismatic Gallery)-unknown-Louisville Numismatic Exchange 5/90.
