Lot 571

1796 S-87 R3. VF-35. Liberty Cap. Very attractive glossy steel brown and chocolate with frosty lighter brown faded down from mint color in protected areas and darker steel toning on the highpoints. The surfaces are excellent, free of any hint of corrosion or verdigris. The only defects other than a few microscopic ticks here and there are a thin nick touching the bottom of the O in OF and a smaller nick over the T in CENT. Excellent eye appeal for the grade, nearly choice. M-LDS, Breen state III. Traces of die rust associated with the die state are scattered over both sides (microscopic raised lumps on the surfaces of the coin), strongest at the left side of the U in UNITED. The fields are slightly reflective thanks to freshly polished dies and traces of mint luster show in protected areas. Called VF30 and tied for CC#10 in the Bland census.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
