Lot 564

1795 S-78 R1. VF-25. Plain Edge. Double Struck with 2 Dates. Sharpness EF40 or slightly better but the planchet is covered with microscopic granularity. No verdigris, but there are numerous faint hairline scratches on the obverse, none visible without the aid of a glass. Recolored a slightly glossy reddish chocolate and steel with traces of light brown in a couple of the protected areas. This cent was double struck with a rotation of about 45 degrees between the impressions. The 1795 date from the first strike is clearly visible off the bust tip of the second strike. Extensive additional undertype from the first strike is clearly visible on both sides. E-MDS, Breen state II. Another outstanding mint error from the March Wells collection.
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
Ex Chris McCawley 2/07.

Realized $3,450
