Lot 563

1795 S-78 R1. EF-40 Plus. Plain Edge. Sharpness AU50 but there are numerous tiny planchet chips in the fields before the behind the portrait, as struck. Plain edge 1795 cents almost always display some of these natural planchet flaws, but there are too many on this example to ignore. No corrosion or verdigris and only a few trivial marks, including a shallow pitmark between the feet of the F & A and a microscopic hairline scratch on the M in AMERICA. Glossy chocolate and olive with darker steel brown toning on the highpoints and frosty lighter brown toning in the protected areas on both sides. Close to EF45. E-MDS, Breen state II. There are clear die clashmarks on both sides but the tiny chip on the lower edge of the jaw has not formed.
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
Ex Doug Bird 4/92-Chris Kromer, McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Superior 2/18/01:2157.
