Lot 562

1795 S-77 R3. VG-8. Plain Edge. Flipover Double Strike. Very attractive glossy chocolate and light olive brown with traces of slightly lighter brown toning on the obverse. The surfaces are smooth and void of any roughness or other defects, a choice example for the grade. Double struck with the planchet flipped over between the impressions. The upper half of the head and cap plus BE in LIBERTY from the first strike show clearly as undertype on the upper left of the reverse, but there is no trace of undertype visible on the obverse. This suggests the initial strike may have been uniface (against a blank planchet on the reverse side rather than against the reverse die). The second strike is also slightly off center to K-9. This is a choice example of a very impressive mint error. This cent is plated in the Breen book on the cents of 1793-1814 to illustrate the flipover double strike type of mint error (page 253). Removed from an ANACS slab graded VG8 (ANACS label included, and it notes the attribution and Flipover Double Struck feature).
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
