Lot 537

1794 S-59 R3. VF-30 Plus. Glossy light olive brown and steel blending to chocolate in protected areas. Smooth surfaces offering very nice eye appeal. Close to VF35. The only marks of any interest are a tiny rim bruise at the top of the cap, a small planchet chip or pitmark between the B & E in LIBERTY, and a tiny planchet fissure (as struck) on the rim over the second S in STATES. E-MDS, Breen state II, with the usual die clashmarks but no cracks. The dies were not in perfect axial alignment (the die faces were not parallel) causing the upper edge of the obverse and lower edge of the reverse to be a bit weakly struck relative to the rest of the coin. Removed from a PCGS slab graded AU50 (PCGS label included).
Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000.
Ex Dr. Robert J. Shalowitz-Doug Bird 1997-Robert C. Clark, 2000 ANA Sale (Bowers & Merena), lot 344-Steve Fischer 4/03.
