Lot 535

1794 S-57 R1. VF-30 Plus. Slightly sharper, especially the hair details, but the planchet displays numerous tiny planchet chips, mostly at the top of the cap and LIBE, at S-OF, and around UNI. All these chips were present on the planchet before striking, but the pressure of the strike was not sufficient to squeeze all these marks out of the final product. This variety (along with several others) is notorious for these tiny planchet flaws. Otherwise the surfaces are quite nice, void of corrosion or verdigris and displaying only a few minor contact marks. A thin nick on the jaw over the throat, a diagonal nick in the field before the neck, and a dull mark slanting through the O in ONE are the notable defects. Glossy chocolate brown with frosty lighter brown toning in protected areas on both sides. EDS, Breen state I, before the obverse die flaws.
Estimated Value $2,000 - 3,000.
Ex Superior 5/30/93:38 (via Don Valenziano).

Realized $4,485
