Lot 398

1837 N-16 R3 PCGS graded MS65RD. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. Plain Hair Cord with Medium Letters. Bright original mint red, as brilliant as the day it was struck. Flawless except for a dull scrape down from the right edge of the curl over the 7 in the date and a tiny scuff left of the O in ONE. A breathtaking large cent in spite of the few marks, the "reddest" piece in this fabulous collection. MDS with fine die flowlines in the obverse fields and a worn out reverse (this reverse die was worn out during the earlier N-2 marriage). Called MS70- and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS65 and tied for CC#1, his photo #21783. Our grade is MS65. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $5,000-UP.
Ex Oliver E. Futter, Louis Helfenstein, Lester Merkin 8/14/64:172-Floyd T. Starr, Stack's 6/13/84:349 (via Tony Terranova).
