Lot 376

1837 N-9 R1 PCGS graded MS64RB. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Beaded Hair Cord, Head of 1838. Slightly faded mint red changing to bluish steel on the highpoints, about 75% of the subdued mint color remaining. No contact marks, only a sprinkle of small spots of blue steel toning on both sides. MDS with additional die cracks on both sides. These include a forked crack down from the dentils right of star 7, another from the dentils through the 3 in the date, hair curls, bun, and star 9 to the dentils above, one through star 12 to the dentils at stars 11 & 13, another from the dentils through star 1 and the nose and LI into the field under star 7 where it fades out, plus a tiny lump on the bust tip along the earlier crack. On the reverse we have new cracks through the first S in STATES to the wreath under UNITED exiting at the ribbon fold and passing to the dentils below, plus an extension of the earlier crack that now exits the wreath under the first A in AMERICA and weakly reaches its left foot. Yes, there are a lot of cracks, but we are far from done with die cracks on this variety. Called MS70- and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS63 and tied for CC#1, his photo #28797. Our grade is MS64. PCGS Population 2; 2 finer in 65RB.
Estimated Value $500-UP.
Ex T. James Clarke 10/54.
