1837 N-7/8 R1 PCGS graded MS64RB. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Plain Hair Cord with Medium Letters. The obverse is lustrous steel brown with mint red covering the protected areas, at least 20% of the surface showing original mint color. The reverse is frosty light olive brown with delicate overtones of sea green but no mint color. A streak of darker toning from the center of the cheek to the dentils just right of the date is the only notable mark on an otherwise very attractive cent. EDS but not quite the earliest, Newcomb's #8 (his #7 and #8 are from the same dies, with N-8 from the early state and N-7 from the late state). The fields are satiny thanks to microscopic die flowlines but the die lines over MERICA are clear. Called MS65 and tied for CC#2 in the Noyes census, his photo #21877. Bland says MS65 as well but tied for CC#3 in his list. Our grade is MS63. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
