Lot 363

1837 N-3 R7+ (as a proof) PCGS graded PR65BN. PCGS graded Proof 65 Brown. Plain Hair Cord with Medium Letters. Very attractive deep magenta with tiny peeps of faded mint color on both sides. The fields are nicely reflective with moderately deep mirrors and the eye appeal is excellent. There are extremely fine hairlines covering the fields but no carbon spots. The notable marks are a pair of extremely light nicks just right of star 4, a microscopic struck-through line in the field at the throat (caused by a tiny piece of lint on the die), and a thin streak of lighter toning slanting over the O in ONE. This piece is coin #1 in Walter Breen's list of the 5 proof examples known to him (page 65, Walter Breen's Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins 1722-1977). Called Proof-65 choice and CC#1 in the Noyes census, his photo #36388. Bland says Proof-63. Our grade is Proof-65. PCGS Population 1; 1 finer in 67BN.
Estimated Value $20,000-UP.
