Lot 343

1835 N-16 R2 PCGS graded MS65BN. PCGS graded MS-65 Brown. Head of 1836. Lustrous bluish steel and light olive with traces of faded mint red in protected areas on both sides, especially on the reverse. The surfaces are satiny and the eye appeal is excellent. Nearly void of marks. A thin diagonal nick on star 7 and a small nick well hidden in the dentils at star 2 are the only defects on an otherwise outstanding cent. MDS with fine die flowlines covering the fields near the dentils. Called MS60+ and tied for CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 and tied for CC#6, his photo #21606. Our grade is MS62+, very close to MS63. PCGS Population 1; none finer.
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.
Ex Francis H. Lee, who donated this cent to the Essex Institute of Salem, Massachusetts, circa 1913-Stack's sale of the Essex Institute collection, 2/6/75:204-R. E. Naftzger, Jr. 2/11/75-Myles Z. Gerson-Jerry A. Bobbe-Myles Z. Gerson 1/12/79.
